What about painting in cold or rainy weather?
Most of today’s latex paint products dry quickly. After over 30 years
of experience we know what we can or can’t do. Bad weather is not as
much of a problem that it used to be. Most surfaces don’t need to be
extremely dry. Moisture under old layers of paint isn’t trapped by
application of new latex paints. It only takes a few minutes for the
paint to set so rain won’t disturb it. The life of the job is not
affected by application in cool weather. Our reputation is too valuable
to do something that will not work.
Of course we can’t actually apply paint on exposed
surfaces while it is raining. Most finish coats are water thinned, so
waiting until weather is perfect is not necessary in most cases.
We can do pressure washing on rainy days whenever possible to maximize our time as it relates to weather
Large eaves on a house make it easier to paint the vertical walls in poor weather. It acts like a natural awning or umbrella.
Vertical walls do not get very wet, compared to exposed areas like decks.
If rain washes off wet paint on a job (which almost never happens), it
is our responsibility to fix it. We will not come back to you and ask
for more money because of weather problems. We take all the risk.
No job we have done in January has failed any faster than the ones done in July. It just takes longer to complete.
There is also “cold weather” paint that is a real product (been out for
at least 10 years now) and allows us to paint down to 35 degrees. Brrr!
We have powerful propane heaters that are like the ones
used in large warehouses. We can create a warm enviornment and actually
dry off wet surfaces rather quickly.
Acrylic latex paints will generally last longer over a
properly prepared surface and hold its color better and retain its
s-t-r-e-t-c-h-a-b-i-l-i-t-y over oil based paint or stain.
We sometimes use waterproof tarps to protect decks from rain, while the work is progressing.
In the Northwest, weather can be a problem. If we waited for perfect
weather, there would not be any professional painting contractors doing
exterior work. That’s because there are only 2-3 months of generally
sustained good weather and no contractor can survive on 2-3 months
work. We take the good days as they come and take advantage of any day
it doesn’t rain. |
