COLOR CONSULTING
The job of a color consultant is to help the customer visualize the completed look in their mind using a combination of paint chips and possibly wet sample paint outs. Unlike an interior decorator, a color consultant has no interest in selling you new windows, doors, sofas or anything. He only wants to enhance what you have or add a design element, such as window trim and multiple colors on the front door area. Jim has almost 40 years of doing just this. As a photographer and person who loves the world of color, he comes alive when he is involved in helping you choose colors.

Choosing a color scheme is a matter of finding colors you like, coordinating them with the fixed colors and surfaces of the house, and choosing what to emphasize.

• The first step is to gather ideas. Write down house addresses with colors that you like. Write down color combinations. Gather paint chips and put them next to each other (cut them out with scissors). Not every color you like will look good on your house. Look at brochures, books, etc. to get ideas. The key word here is “idea”.

• Photographs of other houses are a good source of inspiration. With digital cameras today it is no problem to snap a few pictures of local houses and view them on your computer to see if you like them. Color selection is a very visual process. The more visual aids, the better.

• This is not a process you want to rush, because you will have to live with the colors for as long as your paint job lasts - many years. This also doesn’t mean the process should take weeks to complete. To a boring colored or monotone house, properly chosen colors can brighten and add a new sense of style and design. Your house can stand out or blend in, depending on your choice. Either way, it can look much better than it does now.

Color selection is not easy for some people. We will try to make the process painless. Paint color chips tend to be very small and your house is rather large. Have fun and think "outside" the box. Don’t think simply because no one has done what you think before, it would be strange. Tasteful variations are healthy. Typically the houses we paint are the best looking ones on the block.
